Our house has one of the largest back yards on the street. We are the corner lot and our house does not take up much of the lot! One feature that our house was listed as having was a "xeri-scaped" yard. This translates to "we didn't know what to do with the acre and a half of weeds so we laid down some weed sheet and dumped rocks on it." We had a porch built last summer which has made us spend more time out there. Now Lindy would like to have something other to play with than rocks and dog poop. Our first major project was to build a "kid run" rather than a dog run. Water is very expensive here (we do live in a desert) so there is no way we could afford to turn the whole yard into grass. We also didn't want to make it so Shelby had to spend her days in a little pen. We fenced off a 16x30 patch for grass and included part of our patio in it. We still don't have the grass planted, but at least Lindy now has a place to play without fear of choking on rocks!

Still moving rock.
My dad rototilling the space Jim cleared
As Dad was tilling we heard a sickening "thunk" and I watched a strip of ground jump all the way to the house. We unearthed a really old extension cord that was running into our crawl space. We think it used to take power out to the shed that is an eye-sore. Another theory is that it was powering Erin's house behind us! We did call her to make sure all of her lights still worked!
Shelby enjoying the cushy dirt patch we made for her.
"Don't worry guys, I got this one over here for you!"
Lindy enjoying her fence!
